What is wrong with the world? Don't people know that the more attention you bring to an issue, the more attention it gets! You can't just pretend it "gay" people don't exist or cancel a prom to make them disappear. Crazy!

A basic understanding of logic is necessary to be able to read critically and write with coherence. Good critical thinking follows rules of logic to observe, interpret, apply, and revise ideas or problems. Check out these rules of logic and a great list with examples of fallacious reasoning:
http://penningtonpublishing.com/blog/reading/how-to-teach-logic/

Comment on President Obama's Speech to Students has Parents Outraged?

I'm going to try to keep this short and simple if possible. I don't want to be misunderstood either in what I'm trying to say. I really, at this point, could care less whether you agree or disagree with President Obama, his views, his morals, his beliefs. Each to his own there, we all have been given the the ability and the right to choose freely. I personally do not agree with a lot of the president's agenda, etc., but I do respect & pray for him daily. What I believe though is NOT my issue with this whole situation. My issue is that parents in our country still have the right to be a parent! These are their kids. If they do not want their child seeing or hearing it, then so be it. That is there RIGHT! Most of the ones I've talked with want to watch it, but later, when they can sit down and talk about it with them, based on their beliefs and values. Parent involvement at its fullest, if you ask me. Not to mention, for those that decide they just don't want their child to view it, so be it. It is their RIGHT as a parent. Everyone else gets the same right to raise their children how they want, let these do the same. I'm not questioning or guessing what his message will be about ahead of time, but I want this right for parents to remain. Yes, I'm sure with all of this media frenzy now about this, that the White House will make full sure that there is nothing questionable in the speech. They would be idiotic if they didn't. However, it is still the right a parent has to decide if their child should view it (not to mention we are focusing on K-6th students, not high school students). If we don't protect this right now, in something like this, later when who knows who will be in charge or what will be going on in the world, this can and will be a precedent set for the future. Does anyone ever want to lose their right to be a parent? I don't think so. Protecting our rights is all I'm saying here! Let parents be parents!

And as a side note, being a teacher in the public school, I once again raise an eye brow at the fact that this is being dictated to us to show or not in the classroom. As good teachers, we portray this message all the time to our students. Yes, it is nice that the president is jumping on the bandwagon and is possibly going to say the same thing (we won't know for sure until it is released Monday). But why can't we, as teachers, be given the respect to decide when and how to use it in the curriculum. Breaking the day at 12 noon to watch it may or may not be the best timing and have zero impact due to no connections being made to what's going on. We are always told to connect what we are teaching to something for true learning to take place. What if noon on Tuesday is not the best or any connection to make? Not to mention, the fact that it is being released to preview only a day ahead of time AND on a holiday to boot. To me that is sending a clear message to teachers that our time is not our own & that it's not valuable to anyone else.

This has got to be the craziest controversy I've ever heard! With so much real problems going on in the world, why are people making this an issue? Makes my stomach turn! Some people made the President guilty before even hearing the speech. What is wrong with writing an essay about how you can help your president make your world a better place.
